The Two Halves of the Hype Cycle
AI and LLM's have me thinking a lot about the Gartner Hype Cycle lately - are you going to generate more value on the roller coaster of the Front Half, or the less glamorous but more proven Back Half? And why?
On the heels of acquiring ChampionX and doing some re-org, SLB (the OFS giant fka as Schlumberger) is now reporting its software and services under its own "Digital" division with 3rd quarter revenues of $658mm ($2.6B/yr run rate, $900mm ARR) at a 28% operating margin. 76% of revenue came from their International regions, vs. 24% North America. SLB has long been a monster for O&G software and data with products like Delfi, Petrel, and Techlog, but this is more detailed financials on those offerings than we've seen before. Now if HAL and WFT could just follow suit…
S&P sells EDM
Enterprise Data Management (EDM), one of the legacy Markit products (predating the IHS merger), is being sold to the private equity firm STG Partners. No press release that we can find, but the head of sales for EMEA at S&P posted it to LinkedIn. EDM is an MDM and data management tool originally built for the financial industry, repurposed by IHS to serve E&P companies. Curious what they decide to do with it and its integrations with Kingdom and Enerdeq data.
Power BI November release
Another month, another batch. Key features we see are standalone Copilot "chat with your data" features, a new MCP server option, semantic model version history, and some tweaks to Matrix and Card visuals.
