Bricks and Spackle (Reprise)

I (Zack) have been furiously putting the finishing touches on this year's Software Survey Report, so we're republishing a previous blog that still rings true years a decade after I first used the metaphor in a meeting.

Major enterprise applications are like Bricks—imperfect and yet very hard to swap out. Spackle (in the form of BI and integration tools) fills in the gaps, and are a crucial part of success at an E&P company. The only thing I'd change about this blog today is that we have a new kind of Spackle available to us—LLMs are increasingly being used to solve "gap" problems between systems.

Novi Labs Acquires Turing

Novi Labs is buying Turing Analytics, the Canadian-based maker of EVA. We've heard Turing/EVA mentioned a lot among Canadian operators, we're guessing they decided it was better to join forces with a US-based firm than try to get a toehold organically. There's a fair bit of overlap in what we understand to be the capabilities of the two platforms, curious to see what Novi does with the combined assets. Novi raised $35mm last summer with the goal (in part) of making some acquisitions. More to come?

TGS/Danomics Partnership Expands

This news actually came out a couple of days before the huge S&P/SLB announcement last month, but in a lot of ways it feels like a response. The data provider TGS announced an expanded partnership with Danomics, a geoscience interpretation platform, including direct data connections for well logs and tops. Combined with the partnership with Oseberg and the merger with PGS, TGS is increasingly a data vendor worth paying attention to in the Lower 48...

May Power BI Release

Another month, another batch! Interesting things to our eyes are improved semantic model metadata to feed Copilot, version history for Power BI Desktop, an updated Get Data dialog, and a huge wave of General Availability releases (better text boxes, translytical task flows, and some UI improvements).
