In their first purchase in about a year (and first since Blackstone bought Enverus last summer), Enverus is buying Spatial Business Systems, which focuses on design and engineering of utility systems. Interesting to see Enverus get back in the A&D game after being pretty quiet the last few years. They were extremely active buyers of software and data in the 2018-2021 timeframe, including OilDex, MineralSoft, Midland Map Company, RSEG, and more. Will they ever get back to that pace?
A decade after Microsoft did it with Power BI, Tableau Desktop is now free. They appear to be setting the paywall at basically the same place as Power BI now (sharing securely within your company). Will Spotfire ever follow suit? Say it louder for the folks in the back - BI tools are increasingly commoditized! Like it or not, that probably means the cheapest and easiest tool will win.
Power BI March release
Another month, another batch. Lots of small-but-interesting things this month, including data write-backs (via translytical task flows), a modernized default visual theme, and series label leader lines. Plus, a continued push towards the TMDL view (Power BI constructed entirely through code), which at heart is about helping LLM's build Power BI files more efficiently.
