SLB's second upstream software acquisition in as many months came in late May, as they announced they are buying Tachyus, a Houston-based O&G software company. Tachyus has an unusual combination of product offerings, from their Acqueon subsurface modeling software to Aurion GHG emissions management tools.
RBN Bought by Novi
Novi is buying again—this time, a midstream-focused advisory firm called RBN. Coming on the wake of Novi's capital raise in 2025 and acquisition of Turing Analytics last month, Novi seems to be making a move towards being a broader provider of market intelligence.
Enertel Bought by Spotfire
This is a first as far as we can call—Spotfire has purchased the software/consulting firm Enertel, maker of QuantumCast, a forecasting and valuation platform. We can't think of another time Spotfire has made an acquisition along these lines, but Enertel has a long history building O&G-focused tools on top of Spotfire.
Rose & Associates Bought by CMG
CMG, the maker of seismic and reservoir simulation software, bought Rose & Associates back in March for $10mm. Rose is a software/consulting firm with a particular focus on probabilistic subsurface assessments with a software platform called Geo Risk Analysis Studio and a long history as a leader in risk analysis training and consulting.
Power BI June Release
Another month, another batch. This one's a bit bigger than normal, associated with the Build conference: a bunch of promotions to GA (including some useful map items), some Copilot features to help with semantic modeling and AI readiness, and a first-party MCP for using LLMs to drive Power BI report creation and modification. Plus a long-awaited date picker for slicers!
Microsoft Build Announcements
Microsoft's annual developer conference featured several AI-related releases that are likely to matter to E&P companies, including Fabric Apps (LLM-driven visualization platform), Rayfin (secure platform for vibe-coded apps), and broader usability of Power BI semantic models across agentic workflows. Plus, more governance tooling (Agent 365) to keep agents inside the right boxes and out of the wrong ones. It feels like Microsoft is on their typical path—show up late to a new tech area, then flood the segment with tools that benefit from their huge installed ecosystem. It's worked several times in the past (Excel, PowerPoint, Azure, Power BI, Teams, etc). Will it succeed again?
