This was my third year going to Quorum Software's Qnections conference in Vegas. That town WEARS ME OUT, so I guess that says something about how useful the conference is to me that I keep going back.

Take a read, pay attention to arguably the largest O&G software company out there!

S&P Sells Software Portfolio to SLB

This is easily the biggest O&G software news of 2026 so far. S&P Global is selling their (large and impactful) O&G software portfolio to SLB. I can't even tell you how wild this deal is to me—I'm not sure I understand either side of the deal. For SLB, how does that tech stack fit together? How do Petra, Kingdom, Petrel, and Techlog fit together? FieldDIRECT and Avocet? OFM, Harmony, and ECLIPSE? How does S&P's data business change without such a close relationship to Petra/Kingdom/Harmony? And what on earth do the two companies actually *mean* with the related AI announcements? 

Spotfire 14.8 Release

Spotfire 14.8 is out, and while most day-to-day workflows look familiar, a few changes are worth attention. The biggest leap is analytical: Statistica's statistical and ML methods are now available directly inside Spotfire, and reference elements can now function as continuously variable thresholds or comparison curves across time and numeric axes — useful for control limits, type curves, and dynamic targets. Smaller quality-of-life wins include cleaner handling of derived vs. source columns, and finer-grained export controls and more flexible scheduling for enterprise admins.

Power BI April release

Another month, another batch! Key highlights to us are look-and-feel improvements to visuals, more Copilot features embedded in the mobile app, and DirectLake calculated columns.

Banneker Invests in ResFrac

ResFrac has made a lot of noise in the reservoir simulation and hydraulic fracture modeling space over the last few years, with a coupled simulator that has gained a lot of adoption in tight/shale work and now enhanced geothermal workflows. Altira Group exits, while PE fund Banneker Partners put money into them on undisclosed terms. The reservoir simulation world is a tight and competitive space, it will be interesting to see the use of proceeds and how ResFrac's strategy evolves going forward.
